The Japan Study Tour
🇯🇵 Reflecting on an unforgettable Japan Study Tour! From exploring business models to navigating new cities, this journey completely shifted my perspective on business, culture, and leadership.
A few key takeaways from our immersive experiences:
Relationships are Everything: From our company visits to conversations with Japanese business leaders, it became clear that doing business in Japan is rooted in patience, trust, harmony, and long-term commitment. Bypassing middle management or rushing a deal doesn't work; investing in human-to-human connection comes first.
Innovating Beyond the Tech: At Yamaha, studying VOCALOID highlighted how true innovation often requires a complete business model shift: focusing on the surrounding culture and ecosystem rather than just the underlying technology.
Cross-Cultural Decision-Making: Observing Uniqlo's team dynamics and collaborating with BBT students showed me the power of Nemawashi (building alignment) and Ringi (consensus-driven decision-making). Approaching discussions with curiosity rather than direct opposition builds far more resilient outcomes.
Operational Excellence: Companies like Ajinomoto, Uniqlo, Maruhachi Muramatsu, and local farms demonstrated how centering customer care, sustainability, and continuous daily improvement (Kaizen) creates long-term value.
Before the official study tour began, I spent a few days traveling solo through Japan. Moving to a new city almost every day came with its challenges, but I was constantly blown away by the kindness of the locals. From people physically guiding me through train stations when I was lost to a local sushi restaurant owner gifting me a souvenir across a language barrier, experiencing true Omotenashi (selfless hospitality) made me feel so cared for as a solo traveler.
Beyond the business insights, I am incredibly grateful for the lifelong friendships made along the way. Learning alongside such amazing people and from every local, student, and leader I met made this experience truly transformative. A special thanks to Ben who made this all happen. Also to Mika and Hayley who worked hard behind the scenes to make sure we had a seamless experience.
I will be forever grateful for the memories (lots of laughs), the growth, and the incredible people who made this trip what it was!
